Ceramics 1
Artist Statement: I want to create art that gives meaning to its viewers. As a sixteen year old female, I find that I have a lot of free flowing ideas that I can translate into my art and my ceramics pieces. I take other artists into consideration when I create a piece, but I try to be different and think "outside of the box." I like using modern art as an inspiration; I like bold colors and unique designs. I have been drawing and painting and playing with clay ever since I was young. My parents love art, so that was translated into my art style. I used to visit my good friend's art studio, Omri and Julie Amrany, creators of the Michael Jordan sculpture. I always wanted to become a real artist like them. I loved their creativity and style and I wanted to create my own. “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” ― Pablo Picasso. I find this Picasso quote to be true, I loved art as a kid and not I find myself becoming an artist with age, especially in my ceramics class.I came into class the first day and thought I knew exactly my artistic style and what I wanted to create during the year. My first projects were simpler and not as creative as I thought they should have been; initially, ceramics was a struggle. Although we created pinch pots in the beginning, I felt that I struggled to find my style. My first "organic" pinch pot was three pots molded into one, and my "elements and principles" pinch pot was a squared out pot. But, once we started the sgraffito, I think my free flowing style was created. This was apparent in my coil pot as well. Sometimes, when doing artist research before coming up with an idea for my piece, I tried to copy a famous artist's style. But I have found that when I use my own ideas, I love the piece even more. In addition, I have found that I was influenced by the music that was played during class. It helped put my mind at ease and take away all the stress in my life so that I could put my energy into my work. I used various techniques that I learned in previous classes and some that I learned in this class. I used the slip and score technique on practically every clay project, which was a technique I learned at a young age, but was reminded of this year. I definitely achieved a higher level of art making, as well as a deeper understanding of my art and clay making style. When I brought home my pieces, I felt so proud that my family enjoyed my pottery that I have been working on for weeks!
